“Behr 1 Part Epoxy Acrylic Concrete & Garage Floor Paint is available in convenient,
easy-to-use one gallon cans with a re-sealable lid.”
Behr Garage Floor Paint 1 Part Epoxy is an acrylic concrete and garage floor paint that is reasonably priced and relatively easy to apply. Behr garage floor paint is also available in a 2 Part Epoxy for those who want a true epoxy finish.
Behr Garage Floor Paint 1 Part Epoxy
Behr 1 Part Epoxy Acrylic Concrete & Garage Floor Paint is available in convenient, easy-to-use one gallon cans with a re-sealable lid. Coverage is roughly 400 to 500 square feet per gallon for smooth floor or 300 to 400 if your floor or concrete surface is on the rough side. Cost is generally less than $30 per gallon at The Home Depot.
The least complicated of Behr’s garage floor paint, this product is designed for interior or exterior application, such as on garage floors or driveways. When properly applied, the 1 Part Epoxy resists chemicals like oil and gasoline, it resists cracking, peeling and fading and it has a nice satin finish. Behr 1 Part Epoxy garage floor paint also resists hot tire pick up – if it is properly applied with adequate floor preparation.
What is hot tire pick up?
Depending on road conditions, how long and/or how far you drive your car, the tires will usually get hot. When you pull into the garage, the hot tires “pick up” the garage floor paint and ruin your garage floor’s finish (probably ruin your day, too). This is something you want to avoid.
As the name implies, this Behr garage floor paint is a 1-part process, comes pre-mixed for easy use and is available in a wide range of colors. Slate Gray / Satin finish is often the most commonly selected and readily available. Custom colors are also available but may add slightly to the price.
NOTE: This is not an industrial finish. If you plan to use it in a warehouse with forklift traffic, think again. It is also not a concrete waterproofer. It is designed specifically for horizontal surfaces like garage floors and patios, porches, driveways and concrete basement floors.
Behr Garage Floor Paint 1 Part Epoxy – Preparation
Behr strongly recommends ample preparation before applying an Epoxy garage floor paint. A thorough cleaning of the floor with a power washer and stiff bristle brush as well as the removal of all oil and grease stains with Behr degreaser will provide a clean surface for the paint to adhere for long lasting results.
If you are not willing to spend the necessary preparation time, DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT. Instead, choose garage floor tiles, garage floor mats or some other form of garage flooring.
Application of Behr Garage Floor Paint 1 Part Epoxy requires no special tools and is easily applied with the use of a 9″ roller cover with 3/8″ nap. Unless you plan to work on your hands and knees, using an extension pole is ideal. If you don’t have one, they’re cheap and will save your knees and back.
Behr Garage Floor Paint 1 Part Epoxy – Installation
Application of Behr garage floor paint should be continuous with no interruptions or series of extended lapses of application. If you can’t finish the job in one session, you may end up with slight color variants.
Before starting the application, be sure you have enough product to ensure quality and consistency of the application. You can always return unused cans if you buy too much.
For larger garages, friends or family members are a welcome addition to the application process as they will shorten the completion time and allow for an even, smooth coat. Additional coats of Behr garage floor paint may be required depending on the saturation or penetration of the first coat.
Allow ample drying time for the first coat before applying additional coats. Under no circumstance should more than two coats be applied to any garage floor surface.
If you are applying a garage floor coating to a new concrete garage floor, you also need to be patient. Generally, concrete must cure for at least 30 days before you apply any type of coating to the surface.
Behr Garage Floor Paint 1 Part Epoxy – Drying Time
Drying times vary depending on application and air temperature. Proper installation requires concrete surface and air temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees F (10 to 32 degrees C).
Normal drying time for the Behr Garage Floor Paint 1 Part Epoxy is two hours to the touch. Light to moderate foot travel is possible within 24 hours after application. Behr strongly recommends no heavy foot traffic, movement of furniture, etc., for a minimum of 72 hours or longer depending on drying conditions.
VERY IMPORTANT: Vehicle traffic should be avoided for 7 days. Although Behr suggests you may put cardboard down on the newly painted surface after 72 hours and park your car on the cardboard, you should try to avoid this.
Cleaning Behr Garage Floor 1 Part Epoxy
No cleaning products or water should be applied for at least 30 days after application. Under no circumstances should high pressure washers or abrasive cleaners be used to clean a floor that has been painted with Behr garage floor paint at any time. Serious and permanent damage to the painted floor is possible.
Reality Check
Unless you plan to write a book on how NOT to properly apply Behr Garage Floor Paint 1 Part Epoxy, be patient and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Why would you spend the time and money on the project and cause yourself the aggravation of a failed job. The most common complaint about garage floor paint is that it peels up, especially when you drive a car with hot tires onto it (“hot tire pick up”).
Properly preparing your garage floor, properly applying the paint and allowing adequate dry time are all critical. Do it right or don’t do it at all. You will be happier in the end.
