Genie Garage Door Opener Remote – Considerations
Here are a few things to consider when deciding on a replacement Genie garage door remote:
- What model is your Genie garage door opener and when was it manufactured? Genie’s current garage door remotes are compatible with “Intellicode” openers, which were manufactured starting in the mid-1990s. You can still buy replacement remotes for older, non-Intellicode models, but you want to be certain what you buy will work with your opener.
- What kind of remote do you want or need? There are models with 1, 2 and 3 buttons, keychain remotes, wireless, keyless remote entry keypads, etc.
- If you can’t find the Genie remote you want, you might consider a Clicker garage door opener remote. Clicker is made by Chamberlain and is compatible with most garage door opener models.

NOTE: When you look at the picture, you may wonder what the four little tabs are at the corners of the remote. This “deluxe” model actually has a removable cover that can be moved from the back to the front of the remote to keep you from pushing the button if it is in your pocket.

If your Genie garage door opener was manufactured in 1996 or later, this 3 button remote will likely work. Designed to work with all 390 MHZ Frequency Intellicode models, the GIT-3 has 3 buttons and will control 3 separate Genie Intellicode garage door openers.
The GIT-3 has a visor clip and uses A23 Lithium 12 Volt battery.
NOTE: A23 batteries are readily available at grocery and hardware stores, but they can be a bit pricey. You may save some money by buying them online.

If your Genie garage door opener was manufactured before 1996, this 1 button model is likely the right remote for you. Genie models manufactured between 1980 and 1995 used DIP switches to manual set the security code. DIP switches are small switches on the garage door opener power head and on the remote control unit that are set to the same configuration so they will “talk” to each other.
After 1995, Genie created the Intellicode system that automatically changes the remote code after every use. This is generally known as a rolling code remote. Genie garage door opener remotes with rolling codes and those controlled by DIP switches are not compatible with each other.
Per the manufacturer, this model is compatible with all 390 MHZ Genie Openers, except Intellicode models (WILL NOT work with Intellicode models). The GT912-1BL is supposed to be compatible with the following Genie garage door opener models: AT85, AT85P, AT90, CT90, LD12, AT95, AT285, AT290, MAT85, MAT90, GT912.

Garage Door Safety Note: If your garage door opener was manufactured before 1993, it probably does not have garage door sensors or other modern safety features. Replacing your remote with a name brand model or choosing from among several universal remotes for garage doors is fine if your garage door opener is still serviceable and safe.
Without modern safety features like auto reverse, safety sensors, manual door release, etc., a small child, pet, or your car may be unnecessarily damaged, or worse. Buying a new Genie garage door opener remote may solve your problem in the short term, but it is strongly advisable to upgrade your garage door opener for safety’s sake.
