“…the Genie brand is nearly synonymous with screw drivegarage door openers, developed by the company in 1958…”
Genie garage door openers are the original screw drive model. Genie is a popular and trusted brand that also includes chain drive and belt drive options.Since 1994, the Genie company has been owned by the Overhead Door Corporation, founded by C.G. Johnson. C.G. Johnson invented the overhead lifting garage door and the electric overhead garage door opener in the 1920s.
Today, the Genie brand is nearly synonymous with screw drive garage door openers, developed by the company in 1958, but Genie also makes a line of do-it-yourself and dealer-installed belt drive and chain drive models.
The latest Genie offerings include an impressive line of DC garage door openers, from 1/2 HP to 1 HP, with higher opening speeds, motion sensing lights and dual frequency radios. Read on for more details.

In March 2011 Genie introduced 4 new professionally installed DC garage door opener models. The 1 HP TriloG 1500 and the 3/4 HPTriloG 1200 are both screw drive models and the 3/4 HP IntelliG 1200 and 3/4 HP IntelliG 1000 can be outfitted with a chain drive or belt drive lifting mechanism. All four models use Genie’s latest Intellicode® 2 dual frequency remotes for improved security and less potential radio wave interference.
While the latest Genie garage door opener models have many new and updated features, one of the most notable is GenieSense™ monitoring and system diagnostics. GenieSense™ literally monitors every move the garage door opener makes while opening and closing the garage door. If the monitoring system detects an inconsistency, like a person, object or pet hindering the closing cycle, the system will reverse and reopen the garage door.
Modern DC garage door openers make constant monitoring possible and greatly improve safety. DC power also uses less energy and makes for a quiet garage door opener. Soft start and stop is another DC benefit, further reducing operating noise and adding to your garage door’s life.
Two more handy features on Genie’s new TriloG 1500 and 1200 as well as the IntelliG 1200 models include rapid opening speed (from 9 to 12 inches per second depending on the model) and motion sensing light controls.
All 4 of Genie’s new models also feature SmartSet™ programming which makes adjusting the force and speed of your opener as easy as pushing buttons. No more imprecise screw adjustments.
Genie Garage Door Opener Brands and Retailers
Over the years Genie has manufactured garage door openers under many brands, including Alliance, BlueMax, Lift-a-door, Pro-Max, Hercules and Norelco. Parts for all of the Genie brands are supposed to be interchangeable and installation, especially for the screw drive models, is rated by consumers as among the easiest.
NOTE: One thing to keep in mind with Genie is that they work with a lot of retailers, from The Home Depot to Sears, Lowe’s and other retailers. Genie packages their garage door openers differently depending on who is selling them.
For example, if you buy a DirectLift™ model from The Home Depot and one from Lowe’s, the housing will look different even if the “guts” are the same. This website will give you a a basic overview of every model but will not explore the subtle nuances of every model from every available retailer.
