Genie ReliaG 800 1/2 HP Chain or Belt Drive Garage Door Opener

“Modern DC garage door openers have several advantages over AC powered
models, and the ReliaG 800 is a solid, affordable option.”

The Genie ReliaG 800 is a 1/2 HPc* DC powered chain drive or belt drive garage door opener. Using a common power head (the motor that mounts to the ceiling), Genie give you the option of installing a chain OR belt drive lifting mechanism.

The Genie Company has updated its Genie Pro line to include several new DC powered models. Along with the ReliaG 800, Genie now offers the IntelliG 1000, the IntelliG 1200 (see below), the Genie TriloG 1200 and the Genie TriloG 1500. All 5 models can be fitted with a belt drive or chain drive rail.

Among professionally installed, quiet garage door openers, the IntelliG models are worth a look.

The ReliaG 800’s 1/2 HPc* Power Plus motor has sufficient power for most single and double car garage doors. Opening speed for this model is a maximum of 7 inches per second, depending on size and weight of the door. For heavy solid wooden garage doors and carriage house doors, consider a model with at least 3/4 HP.

NOTE: If you want a more powerful Genie Pro model, consider the Genie IntelliG 1000or the Genie IntelliG 1200, both of which have at least 3/4 HP. Differences between these two models include:

  • The IntelliG 1200 features the “Power Plus” DC motor with power exceeding that of a 3/4 HP AC motor while the IntelliG 1000’s power is about equal to a 3/4 HP AC motor.
  • The IntelliG 1200 opens faster at about 9 inches per second rather than about 7 for the IntelliG 1000.
  • The IntelliG 1200 has a motion sensor built into the power head (the motor part that mounts to the ceiling) that turns the light on when you enter the garage.

DC powered Genie garage door openers have several advantages over AC powered models, including:

Soft Start and Stop – DC powered motors can slow down when the garage door is nearly open or nearly closed, which makes for an “easy landing” for the garage door. This “soft start and stop” action not only makes for a quiet garage door opener, it also reduces wear and tear on the door.

Constant Monitoring – Genie’s DC garage door openers monstantly monitors movement of the garage door when it is opening and closing. This not only helps reduce wear and tear, it also improves safety.

When coupled with Genie’s standard Safe-T-Beam® infrared garage door sensors standard on this and most other garage door opener models, garage door safety is improved.

More Efficient – DC motors do their job with less energy. Less energy equals lower power bills, although you won’t see a hugh difference in your bill since garage door openers are not in constant use

Genie ReliaG 800 – Other Notable Features

What else is worth mentioning on the ReliaG 800? Multi-fuction wall control, easy force and travel adjustments on the power head and a dual light 120 Watt (max.) time delayed lighting system.

When engaged, the vacation lock will not allow the opener to be controlled by garage door remotes or the wall control. This is a nice feature to have when you go on vacation or leave for an extended period of time.Multi-Function Wall Control – The ReliaG 800 wall control does much more than a doorbell-style button. To go along with the obvious open/close button there is a separate button to turn the light on an off and another button to engage the vacation lock feature.

Easy Force and Travel Adjustments– Adjustments to closing and opening force as well as garage door travel (when the garage door stops at the top and bottom of its cycle) are easily accomplished with clearly marked buttons and screws on the power head.

Dual Light System – The ReliaG 800 features a 2 bulb 120 Watt lighting system that automatically shuts off after 3 minutes. This is adequate light if you just park your cars in the garage. However, if you plan to work on your cars in the garage, do crafting or other hobby projects, etc., consider extra or specialized garage lighting. More light is better than not enough light (in my opinion). I say the same thing about electrical outlets, but that’s another story.

Genie ReliaG 800 Safety and Security

Standard safety and security features on the ReliaG 800 are similar to other Genie garage door openers. Safe-T-Beam® infrared garage door sensors and a manual door release are standard on all Genie models.

Infrared garage door sensors emit an infrared light across bottom of the garage door opening. If the light beam is interrupted, the garage door opener will either not work at all (it won’t start the closing cycle), or it will stop, reverse direction and open to the fully open position.

This model also includes ForceGuard™ control that allows you to adjust the garage door’s opening and closing force, Safe-T-Stop® that re-opens the door if it has not closed within 30 seconds, Watch Dog™ monitor that stops and reopens the door if the Safe-T-Beam® system malfunctions, and another safety feature that will stop and reverse the garage door if the system senses a problem with the relay that closes the door.

Ever since the federal government made new, anti-entrapment safety systems a requirement on all garage door openers beginning in 1993, safety has continued to improve. Genie does a good job in this area.

Genie ReliaG 800 Garage Door Remotes

The ReliaG 800 comes with a Genie 3-button Intellicode® 1 remote. Additional garage door remotes can be purchased, and each opener can be used with up to 7 different remotes.

Just in case you are wondering, Genie recently introduced Intellicode® 2 remotes for its new IntelliG and TriloG lines. The difference is that Intellicode® 2 remotes use the latest encryption technology. Intellicode® 1 models still provide more than 4 billion codes that change after every use.

The ReliaG 800 is compatible with the HomeLink® and Car2U® home automation systems if your car is equipped.

Genie ReliaG 800 Consumer Reports

Because they are fairly new to the market, there has not been a lot of consumer feedback on the new Genie Pro models. The ReliaG 800 comes from a reputable company and is backed by an extensive network of professional Genie garage door opener dealers.

*NOTE: For the technically minded, DC power is not measured in horsepower. It is measured in Newtons and the ReliaG 800’s 1/2 HPc (horsepower comparable) Power Plus motor exceeds Genie’s specifications for a 1/2 HP AC motor.
