Workbench Stool Find the Perfect Stool for your Garage Workbench

Buy, borrow or build a workbench stool to go with your garage workbench. How simple or elaborate you go depends on how much time you spend in the garage.

If you regularly sit at your workbench to tie flies, create arts and crafts projects, make repairs, or do any thing else that takes more than a few minutes, you could probably use a stool. Even if you don’t like to sit and work, you may have a guest who does.

In my case, my dad likes to stop by to sit and visit while I am working on a project. If I don’t have a place for him to sit, I miss out on the opportunity to spend time with Dad. And that’s a waste of life.

Workbench Stool – Style Options

Adjustable or Fixed Height — If you are the only one working in your garage, a fixed height stool works well. If others might be using the stool, too, go for the adjustable. My dad, for example is 5 inches taller than me and a taller stool works better for him. The Alera adjustable utility stool is a good option (see picture above), unless you are over 250 pounds.

Workbench Stool Without Rollers

Rollers or Not? — If you tend to work on one thing for long periods of time, like tying flies, rollers are probably not as important. On the other hand, if you will be going back and forth between your tool box and the workbench, you might like rollers.

Just remember to keep your garage floor clean if you plan to roll around on the concrete very much.

For me, I like the straight leg style without rollers. The appropriately named Busted Knuckle garage stool is a reasonably inexpensive option. However, it can be a little uncomfortable for long stretches of sitting. For the up and down type like me, it works great.

With or Without a Back Rest — Here again, this depends on what you will be doing. For long, involved projects, a back rest comes in handy. If you are going to be getting up and down a lot, the back rest won’t be as important.

If you plan to sit at your garage workbench for extended periods of time, you might consider a drafting chair. That’s basically a fully-adjustable office chair that is tall enough for a taller drafting table (or a workbench).

The multi-function drafting stool pictured to the right is a good example. Plus, it is upholstered with “LeatherPlus” fabric that is easier to clean when it gets dusty.

Workbench Stool – Other Considerations

Before you buy the stool, be sure you like the way your workbench is set up. Here are three things to consider:

1. Proper garage workbench height makes all the difference, regardless of whether you primarily stand or sit while working.

2. If you have shelves above your workbench or other tall garage shelving units, be sure you have a good step stoolGarage Step Stool.

3. When you stand on concrete for long periods of time, it can take a toll on your back. Think about adding an anti-fatigue mat to your wish list.
